Rug and Spindle

Cotswold Weaver
When my soul throws out an image, I step into it.
My craft is inspired by my Scottish ancestors, embedded in my bones from the past.

My Story.....
I am a wild weaver who has no wish to tame her yarns.
The needle, loom and thread have long been my instruments of rebellion.
Rug and Spindle acts as a showcase dedicated to crafting high-quality handwoven rugs from locally sourced raw fleeces, mill selvedge and fleece waste.
Proud to be a Cotswold based weaver and a member of The Cotswold Sheep Society, I celebrate the rich heritage of our region's wool together with its unique qualities.
I work from my heart. I don't plan beyond the size of the weave. I love the feeling of spinning in the raw, warm lanolin on my fingers, the character of the fibres and colours coming alive in front of me.
My commitment to sustainability and traditional weaving ways ensures that each piece is not only beautiful but also environmentally responsible. It is important to me that I honour the artistry of weaving while supporting the wellbeing of the sheep and the forgotten value of their fleeces.
I also take commissions to weave you a truly special rug. Come and meet me and discuss colour, size and hand spun width from the fleeces I collect direct from shearing and wash and spin myself.
I have a collection of raw fleeces from various breeds including Cotswold, Shetland, Hebridean and Herdwick for you to choose from and I will keep you constantly updated throughout the procedure of preparing and weaving your rug.
My rugs are fully traceable to four steps - field, flock, fibre, floor.

Hand Woven Peg Loom Rug
Field, Flock, Fibre, Forever.
Washing
At Rug and Spindle, I can't wait to welcome your shorn fleeces, ready to take it through an exciting transformation. Three washes with organic soap and a splash of vinegar to preserve its lustre and the first step is done.

Carding the Fibres
After three thorough washes, I air dry the fleece, ensuring it's in perfect condition. I then meticulously remove any leftover visual matter like moss and twigs, preparing it for the next exciting step. Once that's done, I run the wool through the hand carding machine, getting it ready for weaving. It's a fantastic journey from raw fleece to beautifully prepared fiber.

"Oh my word she's home. Stripey smells amazing - a lot better than she smells in the field! She's so floofy with her little crimps preserved. Sharon, for once I am speechless, - its so beautiful, crafted with such skill and patience and better than I could ever have imagined. From that raw fleece I sent you to this precious treasure of a throw is nothing short of magical oh, by the way, can you guess that I LOVE IT! Thank you so, so much".

Yesterday I had the privilege to attend a wool workshop with Sharon from Rug and Spindle. I learned how to card wool, choose different wool with colour and texture and then weave on a peg loom to make a seat pad. Sharon explained every procedure exceptionally well and it was easy to follow her instructions. I was thrilled with what I made!

Sharon is a good teacher, giving clear instructions, providing lovely materials, praising us to the hilt and patiently repeating her instructions. Her huge enthusiasm for the craft almost outshone the sunshine and was a joy to be part of. Thank you for sharing the love.

“I recently hosted a wool workshop for Rug and Spindle. It was a fun, fact filled few hours of being very much "hands-on" with the product and equipment Sharon was very quick to assist and explain any areas where we felt stuck and we all progressed and finished our time with the most wonderful pure wool seat pad/wall art or whatever you fancied turning your piece into. Highly recommended”.
